'Bombay' and 'Moonlight' hit Seattle stages
We have both Bollywood and Hollywood on stage during the coming week.
"Bombay Dreams," at the 5th Avenue Musical Theatre, is a London import based on Bombay (aka Mumbay) imports. It is a stage musical that simulates the incredible, fantastical mass-market movies that come out of Bollywood, India's version of Hollywood.
The standard rags-to-riches, obscurity-to-fame and loneliness-to-romance plot lines are enhanced with lush music, lush costumes, lush scenery and lush choreography.
"Bombay Dreams" begins previews Tuesday, opens Thursday and runs through Oct. 1. Tickets are $20-$73; 206-625-1900, 888-584-4849 or at the theater box office (no service charges on tickets purchased at box office).
As for Hollywood, Intiman Theatre offers "Moonlight and Magnolias," playwright Ron Hutchinson's comic take on the birth pangs and delivery drama associated with Tinseltown's legendary mega-monster-blockbuster Civil War romance-and-fantasy historical epic, "Gone With the Wind."
Set in 1939 and based on facts lite, "M&M" focuses on a producer, a director and a writer, all in a panic, who are desperate to salvage what seems to be a flop in the making. Previews begin tonight, it opens Wednesday and runs through Oct. 7. Tickets are $27-$46, discounts for previews, students and groups; 206-269-1900 or www.intiman.org.
