In sync: Dance at Alliance Francaise
Fayza Haq
Majid, an expert in folk dance from Russia, held a dance performance last weekend with his students. The venue was the Alliance Francaise gallery and the black clad dancers were all in hip-hugging layered skirts or tight trousers. Presenting waltz, tango, salsa and a short skit, they captivated the audience with a background of piped in music. For Majid dance is easy as he has been a dancer back home in Russia, for 20 years. "I've learnt modern dances from CDs provided by Lisa Sattar, who wanted to learn dancing herself. As I've been a professional dancer, I can pick up any step seeing it once. "I have 25 students with diverse skills." Majid has been in Bangladesh for six years, although sometimes he misses the mountain air of his home near the Caspian Sea. Speaking to some of the enthusiastic students, one learns that Licia Salam learnt kathak before she turned to salsa and tango in Majid's class. Adnan Saqib Ali learnt tabla and vocal from Chhayanat. He decided to go in for dance to add to his repertoire.
